Intro
I was tasked by the client to brand their 2022 "La Tomatina" tomato festival based in Spain. They wanted some aspects of the Spanish culture embedded in the poster as well as strong hand done typography and bright colors. Of course they also wanted the tomato aspect of the festival, which is the main focus, to be strongly represented throughout the brand as well.

Design Concepting
I decided to go with a splat for my main design element because it's extremely dynamic as it's insinuating something being actively thrown and splatted against a surface which is exactly what is done throughout the whole festival. The vibrant red and yellow is an obvious take from the Spanish flag, and it fits the festival's spirit and origins stunningly. The illustration features a Spaniard woman dancing in a striking red flamenco dress but the hem and sleeves are defined as a tomato splatter to fit with this fun and crazy festival's theme. The date and location type is expressed in a beautiful old European style font which gives a nice contrast the the piece while not being overbearing and sticking very well to the theme.
With this project I experimented with different formatting such as square, rectangle, horizontal and vertical. I began this project with the square poster and later adjusted the canvas and the illustration to better fit the longer frame for the real poster dimensions. Later I switched to a horizontal design, modified the type, and spanned the splatter dress across the shape for the billboard. For the vertical layout flagpole banner and access pass, I split the word "Tomatina" in half into Toma and Tina. For the pass, I made the top of the card look like a splatted tomato that drips down onto the yellow and on the stem I reversed out a "2022".
In conclusion, I created a dynamic, vibrant, design that not only represented the festival but also a little bit of Spain's culture. The fun hand-done typography reversed out of the red dress gives it nice energy and the splatters make it known that it is an event that features tomato. This branding fits the theme of the event and is a fun element for people to look at and to wear.
