Intro
The goal of this project was to design a book jacket for the book Origin by Jessica Khoury using elements and themes from the book that would call people’s attention from the shelf.  In my research I found that the type of book I was designing for usually had the same approach as to the covers. The client specified that they wanted a design that was not so dependent on a human being the main element.
Creative Process
Design Concepting
I created a high contrast design with deep visuals that not only call one's attention from the shelf but that once picked up, makes the viewer wonder what they mean.
The illustrations I decided to feature in this design are extremely conceptual and represent many of the messages found throughout the book. Since the project called for a non-human focal point, I decided to use the main character's jaguar as as a representation of her, and her struggle to break out of captivity/immortality. The test tube that the jaguar is breaking in its mouth represents the lab the main character was born in and her desire to escape it. The orchid pattern on the jaguar and front jacket flap is the Elysia flower from the book- the origin of the immortality serum. At the beginning of this project I researched and identified the symbols in this book and I made sure that they were incorporated into the design.
I am proud of the of how this design in its entirety came out. It is consistent across all the flaps and very well blends together as one page. Illustrating the jaguar took a long time but It turned out to be a great focal point in the design. The contrast of the dark green and 100% magenta stands out and would surely gain glances from the shelf.
