Intro
I was tasked with creating a whole branding system (logo included) from zero for the company Origins which is a pottery studio and shop. The client gave me complete creative freedom over the project and I decided to forge a branding system that is recognized for its class, uniqueness, and variability. I wanted to connect with the roots of this ancient form of art and represent it throughout the branding. The branded items required were business cards, a paper system, an outdoor sign, a mural, wrapping paper, and a fun miscellaneous item that I chose to be a tang top.
Creative Process
Design Concepting
This project began with a ton of options which for me made things a little chaotic since I had to choose a set direction and set boundaries for myself. In the end I went with a simple design that uses the counter space of the “O” in the word Origins to define the hole in the middle of a piece of pottery. It smoothly blends into the design and is conceptual but at the same time obvious and indicative.
This logo is extremely strong and it can work by itself (The "O" Pottery) or with the rest of the word. Since no one piece of pottery strictly defines the craft, it makes it so that the "O" can be changed out for different pieces shapes and styles of pottery making it very versatile.
For the paper system (back of envelope and back of letterhead) I decided to use transparency to give sort of a visual break from the blocks of color. It creates a nice overlapping affect that creates new shapes and in that way takes new forms just like in pottery and working with clay.
The small color palette uses warm, earthy tones commonly found in some materials used for pottery and or sculpting. In the end this design sticks to the origins and is a clean, interesting, and natural representative of the brand.
